Exchange Your Goals For New Habits

How to Turn Your Goals into Lifelong Habits

We’ve all heard it before: the journey is more important than the destination. It’s a cliche saying that has been used one-too-many times and typically falls on deaf ears. However, it couldn’t be anymore true - especially when it comes to the pursuit of your optimal lifestyle.

While setting a goal is great and gives us something to chase after every day, the steps you take to reach that goal will be far more impactful on your life than actually accomplishing it. That isn’t to say that accomplishing a goal doesn’t matter, but it means that the journey you travel along the way towards your destination will have a ripple effect in your life leading you to carry on the habits developed long after the goal has been reached.

Reggie Rivers, a former NFL running back for the Denver Broncos, knows exactly what it takes to make goals a reality. Here he talks about how and why it’s imperative that you enjoy the process of working towards your endgame and how focusing on your behaviours is the key when pursuing greatness.

Focus on the Process Instead of the Result

Let’s say you have the goal of losing 20lbs in the next 6 months. Along this journey you build the appropriate health and wellness team around you and take all the steps required - you eat healthy, exercise once a day, sleep 8 hours a night, and do weekly weigh-ins to track your progress. At the end of the 6 months, you step on the scale and you haven’t reached your goal. Perhaps you have only lost 10lbs and not the 20lbs that you wanted. Does this mean you failed? Absolutely not.

While you may not have met the number on the scale that you had set out for, along the way you made a conscious effort to pay close attention to how you fueled your body, how much you slept, and how often you exercised. Even though the number on the scale wasn’t met, over the course of 6 months you repeated the same actions each and every day - thus creating a habit. These habits you created are now subconsciously ingrained in you.

These newly developed habits will allow you to accomplish other goals and develop more good habits - essentially turning into a never-ending cycle of growth and development.

Remaining Accountable on Your Journey

A key to modifying our current habits and developing new ones is doing the same action each and every day. Some days this is easy and others it feels nearly impossible. This is where creating a team around you can help. By enlisting the services of a health and wellness team, you have a pillar to lean on when things get difficult.
