Narrowing Your Focus and Building a Team
We live in a world where our attention is constantly being shifted to something new - practically every minute. Things change quickly, and we are expected to keep up; however, this newly acceptable form of living is not conducive to accomplishing our goals in the most effective manner.
In order to accomplish anything, you have to first narrow your focus and define the goal, and then you must build the team that will get you there.
The reigning WBC World Heavyweight Champion, Tyson Fury, is no exception to this process. In order for him to not only defeat, but absolutely shut out, the previous champion, Deontay Wilder, he knew he had to block out the distraction and assemble a strong team around him. Here you can watch Fury through a few days in training camp before he fought Wilder and discuss the changes he made to his team, and how this helped him win the World Championship.
Setting SMART Goals
Once you’ve taken your personal inventory it’s time to narrow your focus and define what you want to accomplish. This practice is known as setting a SMART goal, which means it needs to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.
Specific
When choosing what you want to achieve, it’s important that it is very specific; an easy way to ensure this is to answer the five (5) W’s:
What are you trying to accomplish?
Who do you need to help you accomplish this goal?
When will this be accomplished?
Where do you need to go to accomplish it?
Why do you want to do it?
Measurable
It needs to be measurable. This means you need to be able to determine how far along you are on your path and how you will know when you have accomplished your goal.
Achievable
It needs to be realistic. Use your inventory list to determine what skills you have that will help you on your journey and what skills you need to develop to get there - then find the people to make this possible.
Relevant
Make sure what you are trying to accomplish aligns with your life.
Time-Bound
Lastly, set a time limit. It will help you push yourself during the challenging times and keep forging ahead. This will also ensure that you meet your goal.
Assemble Your Team
Now that you have taken a personal inventory and set your SMART goal, you need to assemble a team. This step will require some research on your end. You will need to determine what types of supports you need to reach your objective, and then find those supports in your community.
Remember, due to the ever-evolving virtual world, you don’t have to live in the same community as one of your support members - you can choose to engage with them virtually.
For example, let's say your goal is to be able to wake up in the morning and not have any pain when you get out of bed. To accomplish this, you would need to enlist the support of a personal trainer who is experienced in developing better range of motion and joint health; an osteopath who can give you physical treatment to help realign your bones, joints, and muscles; a massage therapist who can alleviate muscle tightness throughout your physical training; and, perhaps, a nutrition coach to help determine which foods are optimal for your body.
While your hands-on team will need to be close to you, your other support roles - like your personal trainer and nutrition coach - can be online. This way, you can work with them at a time that works for your best life. The key is that your team is aware of your goal and are working together to help you achieve it!
